Carmel, CA Losing Weight And Healthy Diet Can Ward Off A Number Of Diseases
by Richard Kuehn on 07/17/12
Researchers are now finding a number of health problems that can be fatal may all be linked to high fat-foods and excess body weight. They are studying whether inflammation is the body's natural response to injury and outside irritants, and when the outside irritants don't go away, the immune system may trigger a negative response which could increase the risk for disease. Chronic inflammation can cause damage to heart valves and brain cells, cause strokes, promote resistance to insulin and cause cancer. The good news : most of this can be helped simply by having a healthier diet and losing weight. Fiber from whole grains, one study found, protects against inflammation. Weight loss helps as well. Fat cells, particularly around the belly, put out cytokines which set inflammation into motion. "We've learned that abdominal fat tissue is a hotbed of inflammation that pours out all kinds of inflammatory molecules, "Dr. Peter Libby, chief of the division of cardiovascular medicine at Brigham Women's Hospital in Boston told the Wall Street Journal. Many believe a Mediterranean diet (whole-grain foods, unsaturated fats, fruits, vegetables, nuts fish, poultry, eggs and moderate amount of dairy foods) is the way to go. At Family inHome Caregiving we encourage our clients to eat right, get plenty of exercise and get a lot of social stimulation. Many of them are in their 90's and still going strong. They know the drill, they've been doing this for decades.
