Social Security Cuts May Be Debated Depending On The Outcome Of The Mid-term Elections
The mid-term elections are a big deal for seniors as the next Congress will have to consider how to save Social Security and Medicare given the fact that the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has said that President Trump’s tax cuts  will add more than $1.8 trillion to the Federal Deficit by 2028.  That’s going to make it harder to borrow from Peter to pay Paul.  “Social Security has been getting more attention recently, largely as a result of the tax bill.  There’s more talk about cutting

New Medicare Cards Being Mailed To Seniors To Thwart Financial Elder Abuse, But Few Understand Them
Are you confused about your new Medicare card? You are not alone!  A new survey by AARP found that more than 75% of seniors know little about the new cards, and almost 60% believe they will have to pay for one (you don’t).  The cards are designed to thwart elder abuse scams by not listing your Social Security number on the card.  Rather, it will have a unique combination of 11 letters and numbers.  Hopefully this will stop some senior cams.

Many Advances In Lung Cancer Treatment Announced By Researchers
Researchers showed off their advances in fighting one of the deadliest diseases known, lung cancer, at a recent conference.  At the American Society of Clinical Oncology they said that newer approaches ranging from immune-boosting drugs to treatments targeting genetic traits of tumors can help those afflicted with the disease. “The era in which chemotherapy was the only option for non-small-cell lung cancer patients is drawing to a close,” John Heymach, a lung-cancer specialist at the University

Drug Trials Halted On Promising Alzheimer’s Experimental Drug
Many researchers have been banging their heads against the wall for years, frustrated by their inability to find an effective drug to treat Alzheimer's disease.  Many promising drugs have found to be ineffective in widespread drug trials, and those suffering from dementia were dealt another blow when AstraZeneca PLC and Eli Lilly & Company announced that they were scrapping two late-stage trials of an experimental Alzheimer’s drug that was in development.  The two companies chose this path after

LGBT Senior Community Growing, But Resources To Serve Them Are Few And Far Between
With the senior population booming, the needs of minorities and the LGBT community are often overlooked.  In places like San Francisco, where there is a large population of those identifying LGBT, there are actually dedicated classes not just for this segment, but with those who also have dementia.  On the Monterey Peninsula, there were efforts to bring services directly targeted at LGBT Seniors.  However, with state and federal subsidies cut dramatically, little has been done to serve this
