Caregivers Tend To Neglect Their Own Health
A new survey by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found about one-third of caregivers have gone without a routine physical or dental care, skipped or didn’t schedule a test or treatment or even forgot to fill a prescription because they were too busy with caregiving duties.  Doctors could step in to help, according to the study.  Most caregivers go to medical appointments with the seniors they care for but they’re less likely to get information about self-care, support

Medicare Changing Advantage Plans So You Can Switch After Three Months
Starting in 2019, you will no longer be trapped in the same Medicare Advantage program that you chose in 2018.  You can now test drive a program and switch to another program within the first three months.  This change was mandated by Congress in the 21st Century Cures Act, designed to accelerate innovation in health care.  This can be very useful if you are prescribed an expensive medication and it may benefit you to switch plans.

Medicare Expanding Coverage For Home Care Aides
Check your Medicare Part D coverage carefully this year.  Starting in 2019, insurers selling the Advantage plans have the option to cover home care aides (HCAs).  Previously, these policies only covered home health aides.  However, the definition has been expanded to non-medical services like those provided by Family inHome Caregiving such as dressing, eating and personal care.  In order to be covered, these services must be recommended by a medical professional.

    Medicare Slowly Expanding Telemedicine Coverage
Medicare is slowly but surely expanding its coverage of telemedicine.  In 2019, it will cover over the phone or via a video conference call with a doctor for those being treated for a stroke and for those in end-stage renal disease.  It’s not much, but it’s something!
